Planning permission is required for most building operations and changes of use unless the works are classed as ‘Permitted Development’. As Castle Eden is designated as a conservation area there are additional planning controls related to tree felling, lopping and pruning and to the demolition of buildings.
Some buildings in Castle Eden which are of historic architectural interest have been designated as ‘Listed Buildings’ and additional consent is required to alter them or their settings. The Castle, for example, is a Grade 2 listed building.
Even if planning permission is not required approval under the Building Regulations may be required.
How do I know I need planning permission?
You can check whether permission is required through the Planning Portal.
The weekly lists of planning applications in County Durham can be viewed on the Durham County Council website.
Alternatively the Castle Eden Society has a Castle Eden Planning Applications page for applications in the Castle Eden area.
