The picturesque St James’ Church is situated close to the Castle grounds. Unfortunately, the church had to be closed in 2016. Castle Eden is now situated in the Church of England parish of Blackhall with Castle Eden and Hesleden, and the parish church is St Andrew’s on Hesleden Road in Blackhall.
Most of the churchyard around St James’ Church is closed for burials and is now cared for by Durham County Council. However, the extension of the churchyard (along the path to the left behind the church) remains open for burials and is still cared for by the Church of England in Blackhall. Castle Eden Parish Council has generously donated towards the upkeep of the churchyard for a number of years.
